The John Michael Kohler Arts Center seeks a dynamic, creative, knowledgeable, and highly organized individual to advance the Museum’s mission of generating a creative exchange between artists and the public. The assistant curator will coordinate and manage the content and logistics of most of the Arts Center’s exhibitions, and will provide research for the exhibitions and Arts Center’s internationally renowned collection. This individual will have the opportunity to curate select installations and small exhibitions from a wide array of artistic fields. The candidate must be comfortable working within a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment, and must possess the skills necessary to think proactively and collaboratively.
Through a vibrant exhibitions schedule, the Arts Center explores original installation works, new genres, other contemporary forms, and the work of self-taught and folk artists. All candidates for this position must have a broad understanding of contemporary art, and be engaged in conversations that expand the boundaries of art making.
Candidates for this position should possess a Master’s in History of Art or a closely aligned field, and must have two years curatorial experience at minimum. A background in critical writing and in-depth knowledge of contemporary art is essential.
In addition to contemporary art practices (including craft), knowledge and understanding of the work of self-taught, folk artists is highly desirable.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; excellent time management and problem-solving skills.

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan is one hour north of Milwaukee and two and a half hours from Chicago. The candidate must be willing to live in the region and have an understanding of artmaking in the Midwest.
