Curatorial Assistant

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, an innovative visual and performing arts complex focusing on unique and diverse contemporary American art, is seeking a curatorial assistant to support the curatorial staff for all matters pertaining to exhibitions, collections, and general department endeavors; may also assist Manager of Exhibitions and Collections, Registrar/s or other Exhibitions department members as necessary.   

Responsibilities:  

  • Assist curatorial staff with administrative, scholarly, and creative aspects of the Exhibitions department’s responsibilities
  • Provide primary research support for assigned exhibitions as directed and supervised by Curators.
  • Provide primary research on permanent collection, as directed and supervised by Curators
  • Execute matters of exhibitions-specific planning as assigned by Curators, Manager of Exhibitions and Collections or Registrars, including, but not limited to:

General communications with artists, galleries, museums, private lenders, and other contacts

            General inquiries and requests for curatorial staff

Audio visual requests, photo rights and reproduction related to exhibitions and collections

  • Assist with installation planning; liaise with registrars and preparator staff to ensure smooth installation periods. Liaise with Marketing and designers on didactic materials and deadlines. Coordinate with photographer on post-installation photographic needs.
  • Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, Museum Studies or related, required; Master’s Degree in Art History or Museum Studies preferred. 

Focus in contemporary art or curatorial studies, along with 1-2 years of work experience, ideal. Excellent communication skills, along with computer, research, writing and editing experience is essential. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail is a must.
