Wandering Wisconsin

Explore astounding large-scale works of art known as art environments that have surprised travelers and intrigued and bemused local residents throughout the Wisconsin landscape for decades. Entry to each of the sites is free of charge.

Delve into the grottos, weave through a European-style shrine and its acres of gardens, admire beautiful vistas, wander along woodland paths where concrete statues decorate the way forward, discover a painted forest, marvel at concrete wonders, and more. Throughout Wisconsin, art environments wait to be discovered anew by you. Each shares the story of the maker’s rich heritage and traditions. Spend an afternoon, a weekend, or an extended vacation exploring art, architecture, and gardens of the nine sites that comprise Wandering Wisconsin—one indoor site and eight outdoor sites.

Second Sundays at the Painted Forest: Plein Air Painting with Kyle Martin
Sunday, July 9
11:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Enjoy art-making, docent tours, live music, and refreshments at Ernest Hüpeden’s Painted Forest. Tours of Hüpeden’s eccentric masterpiece will be given at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. with Director David Wells. Kyle Martin leads plein air painting for all ages (11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.) and live blues/Americana music will be performed by the Hoot Owls (2:00–3:30 p.m.). Refreshments include wood-fired pizza by Branding Iron Roadhouse. Family fun!

James Tellen’s Chair City Cookout

Discover Sheboygan’s history with the Chair City Cookout on August 6, 2017, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. All ages are invited to enjoy food and refreshments, live music, and art-making workshops at this free event set in a fascinating sculpture garden built by Sheboygan resident James Tellen. Grandview’s Art and Family Fun Day

We invite you to explore Nick Engelbert’s enchanting folk art home and environment to enjoy plein air painting and workshops to learn “How to Paint Like Nick.” All materials, instruction, refreshments, and live music will be provided for free. All ages and abilities are welcome!

Art Outdoors at the Wegner Grotto

Explore one of Wisconsin’s fascinating art environments, the Wegner Grotto, and create art in the outdoors. Participate in art activities—painting, clay sculpting, and mosaic making. Instructors will be on hand. All skill and age levels are welcome! The Wegner Grotto is located 15 minutes north of Sparta off Hwy 27, west on Hwy 71, and south of the town of Cataract. Wisconsin Concrete Park‘s Celebration of Arts in Action

Express yourself through instant art opportunities at the park including watercolor painting, adding to a mosaic wall, hand-shaping clay statues, painting on a life-size mural, and more! Tour Fred Smith’s 200+ concrete and glass sculptures and works of art from area quilt clubs. Take time to enjoy another hometown event, the Phillips Fall Harvest Festival, only a mile away.
