“We treasure the tools of our world that help to reveal the invisible magic of another.” Pennsylvania artists Joy Feasley and Paul Swenbeck created Listen, the Snow is Falling for their 2018 exhibition at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Their evocative otherworld has been reconfigured to occupy the space between these two washrooms. Drawn to Emery Blagdon’s “Healing Machine,” the artists included a ladder in response to his attempts to manipulate earth’s energies. Here, it is a symbol for climbing into a different state of existence or plane of imagination.

Feasley and Swenbeck’s interpretations of classics such as the custom terrazzo floors encapsulate the fantastical environment with the use of color, pattern, and unusual materials. Terrazzo first appeared in fifteenth-century Venice as a way to use remnant marble chips. The artists also incorporated recycled crushed vitreous ware from the Kohler Co. Pottery, including some of the failed marbleized pieces from their fixtures, recycled colored glass, and phosphorescent rocks in the floors. The brass inlays were fabricated and cast at the Kohler Co. Foundry. The one-of-a-kind marbleized bathroom fixtures, sinks, and tiles were cast in the Kohler Co. Pottery and Foundry.
