John Morton
Arts/Industry: Pottery, 2001
John Morton is an avant-garde composer whose work showcases the sonic beauty in the world around our ears. If we’re often advised to “stop and smell the roses,” Morton asks us to stop and listen to them and to all the other auditory splendors that we take for granted or are too busy to hear. Morton’s sound installations have been installed in public parks, village greens, pedestrian bridges, historic and industrial sites, libraries, Governors Island (NY), Central Park (NY), Hudson River Museum (NY), and Morris Museum, among others.
He has collaborated with the artist Jacqueline Shatz to construct large-scale music boxes. In 2001, Innova Records released Morton’s first album, Outlier: New Music for Music Boxes, followed by his album Solo Traveler: Music for Music Boxes. His work has been reviewed in the The New York Times. Morton studied privately with David Sheinfeld in San Francisco and attended California Institute of the Arts.
