Poe Dismuke

Arts/Industry: Pottery, 1988

Poe Dismuke’s artwork defies easy categorization. His kinetic sculptures and tabletop contraptions are part of a world where tipping ducks, yakking crows and disappearing mice coexist happily. He draws on everything from the Marx Brothers to Marks Toys, from Calder to Keaton, and from Rube Goldberg to Andy Goldsworthy. His mechanical marvels, ingeniously constructed from common materials, have the nostalgic appeal of well-loved toys.

In 2008, Poe Dismuke opened the Sam Poe Gallery in Bisbee, Arizona, with his wife, Sam Woolcott. It is a contemporary art space featuring their work exclusively.
