Recipe Box, Memory Box: Home Edition
Thank you to all who participated in part one (of three) of The Hinterlands residency, Recipe Box, Memory Box.
The Hinterlands called all of Sheboygan to participate in Recipe Box, Memory Box—a two-week community recipe swap extravaganza carried out over the phone and through the mail. Community members were invited to visit the Social STUDIO to grab a recipe postcard and submit their favorite recipes. There was also the Recipe Box Hotline featuring a new message every day and a prompt to share food memories and recipes. Additionally, The Hinterlands set up one-to-one phone calls (not video—we’re talking old fashioned phone lines!) with someone in Sheboygan to cook a dish that is meaningful to them.
Focused on family stories, tastes of home, and community wisdom, the stories and recipes shared during this period will be collected into a community zine and cookbook in fall 2021 as a part of the performance residency.
Through collecting, sharing, and cooking recipes, The Hinterlands wanted to learn more about the personal and family histories of Sheboygan residents, and the places, people, and memories from elsewhere and else when they carry with them.
This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from Wisconsin Arts Board and the Crane Group.
