Elana Schwartz
Arts/Industry: Foundry, 2016
Elana Schwartz is a full-time artist and wood sculptor currently living in New Mexico. She received her BFA in sculpture from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Schwartz is drawn to the use of statuary as a conduit between the physical and metaphysical; concrete objects transcend the inherent limitations of the physical and provide a channel through which hidden meaning is unlocked. To her, wood is the perfect medium to explore concepts related to the cyclical nature of life because each piece contains within a living history and future of its own. The re-creation of wood into sculpture captures the transformative spirit of our own life cycles, and has the capacity to make any space sacred.
Recent group exhibitions include Once Upon a Time, Studio Door, San Diego, CA; Wood Show, Red Dot Gallery, Santa Fe, NM; Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, Gallery 114, Portland, OR. Schwartz is represented by Ghostwolf Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.
