Dan Gilsdorf
Arts/Industry: Foundry, 2007
After earning his BFA from University of Colorado, Boulder, Dan Gilsdorf relocated to Portland, OR. There he divides his time between co-owning Atlas Tattoo Studios – where he specializes in bold tattoos based in the traditions of classic American and Japanese tattooing – and his studio practice.
Gilsdorf’s studio work includes text-based projects and kinetic sculptures that explore America’s cultural myths and heroes. His work has shown at 12128 Boatspace and Disjecta Arts Center, both in Portland. He has participated in a Signal Fire Outpost Residency (OR) and has been twice-awarded a Project Grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council in Portland, OR.
During his Arts/Industry Foundry residency, Gilsdorf cast components for his sculptures as well as support mechanisms for the motors, bearings, cams, and gears found in his finished work.
