John Grade

Inspired by changing geological and biological forms and systems in the natural world, John Grade works with his studio team to sculpt immersive large-scale, site-specific installations. Kinetics, impermanence, and chance are often central to the work.
Grade has been exhibited at Arte Sella Sculpture Park (Italy), Anchorage Museum (AK), Mystic Seaport Museum (CT), Seattle Art Museum (WA), Davidson Galleries (WA), Austin Contemporary Museum of Art (TX), and University Wyoming Gallery (WY), among others. Grade is the recipient of the 2010 Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Tiffany Foundation award, three Andy Warhol Foundation grant awards, two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, the 2011 Arlene Schnitzer Prize from the Portland Art Museum, and the 2013 Arts Innovator Award from Artist Trust. His work is in the collections of Microsoft Corporation (WA), Anchorage Museum (AK), Austin Contemporary Museum (TX), Portland Art Museum (OR), and Smithsonian Museum of American Art (DC), among others. His work has been reviewed in Design Boom, Apartment Therapy, National Geographic Traveler, Esquire, Dallas Morning News, and Los Angeles Times, among others. Grade received a BFA from Pratt Institute.
