Richard Harned’s artistic practice has evolved from small utilitarian pieces and abstract glass objects to room-size kinetic sculptures built to explore the use of light, movement, and technology in art. He has been an artist-in-residence at Headlands Center for the Arts (CA) and Arts/Industry at Kohler Co. His work has been in eleven solo and 180 group exhibitions, in twenty-seven states and six countries. Harned has been the recipient of an array of artist fellowships in sculpture, craft, and media arts from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

Harned is a professor of art at the Ohio State University where he heads the Glass Art program. He has been a faculty member at Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Tennessee,  Arkansas State University, and a visiting artist nationally and internationally at Academa Minerve (the Netherlands), Aichi University of Education (Japan), Tokyo Glass Art Institute, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (Maine), and the Pilchuck School (WA). He founded the Glass Axis, a not-for-profit workshop and artists’ organization in Central Ohio, and has served as a panelist and site visitor for national and regional art organizations and as treasurer and president of the Glass Art Society. He received his BFA and MFA from Rhode Island School of Design.
