Dr. Nigel Helyer
Arts/Industry: Foundry, 1990
Dr. Nigel Helyer is an internationally recognized sculptor and sound artist–a contemporary polymath whose interdisciplinary practice combines art and science to embrace social, cultural, and physical environments. He brings these concerns together in creative projects that prompt the community to engage with their cultural histories, identity, and sense of place.
Helyer expands the boundaries of experimental practice, especially in the areas of art and science, environmental art, and bio art, leading to projects such as GeneMusiK, a prototype DNA+Music remixing system. He hosted a sonic installation with live insects that has toured seven international festivals. Helyer was the artistic director of the LifeBoat bio art project and cofounder of SoundCulture, which produced a series of international sound art festivals in the Asia Pacific region from 1991 to 2012.
