Arts/Industry: Pottery, 1985

Alice recalls switching from the solitary existence of a studio artist to the “Sturm und Drang of the world’s largest pottery as an energizing experience and one which significantly affected her approach to her work. While a resident of the Pottery, Alice Mueller created a series of pristine vessel forms with a repeated curved pattern and angular blips of color. She also developed a series of geometric sculptures whose lines are broken by small openings. These works address Alice’s “brave new world” concerns, and the slip-casting process allowed for her exploration of geometric, hard-edged relationships. Alice received a B.A. in international relations and an M.A. in urban affairs from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She studied at The Potter’s Wheel in Milwaukee and spent several summers at the Penland School of Crafts, Penland, North Carolina. Her work has been exhibited at the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Rahr-West Museum, Manitowoc, Wisconsin; and Lill Street Gallery, Chicago, Illinois. Alice was the coordinator of the Arts/Industry program from January 1986 to April 1987 and currently is assistant director of education at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
