Arts/Industry: Pottery, 2012, 1978
Farley Tobin is a full time studio artist who received her MFA in Ceramics from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI. An apprenticeship in 1975 at the Moravian Pottery and Tileworks in Doylestown, Pennsylvania led her to making ceramic tile and researching the history of ceramic tiles, architectural tile, and mosaic installations can be found from California to Maine in courthouses, cultural history museums, transit systems, universities, and private homes. Each project has included an intense period of research and development as she focuses on the cultural and physical specifics of the site, the audience, and how it will be seen.
Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Indo US Sub-commission to study Islamic Architecture in India, and a Rhode Island School of Design Faculty Development grant documenting Italian and Portuguese tiles have contributed to her understanding of material culture expressed architecturally in tile. Tobin has participated in several residencies, as well as served on grant panels, juried exhibits, and as a trustee at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, ME.
