Arnold Zimmerman
Arts/Industry: Foundry, 1989, 1991
Arnold Zimmerman earned his B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri and his M.F.A. from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred. He has been an artist-in-residence with the Archie Bray Foundation, Helena, Montana; Alternative Worksite/Bemis Project, Omaha, Nebraska; and the International Symposium of Ceramics, Alcobaça, Portugal. His work has been exhibited with the Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal; Twining Gallery, New York; and at Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, Missouri. He has been the recipient of two Craftsmen’s Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and has also received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Arnie has worked in ceramics for more than 15 years, most recently hand building monumental sculptures which combine organic and architectural influences into a nonfunctional vessel form. He believed the dense shapes would translate well into cast iron and thus worked in the Foundry during his residency. He created several compact forms to serve as bases for tabletops. Each form had the vigorous, organic quality of his ceramic work. He also completed a major installation of 14 richly textured poles, each seven feet tall.
