Patterned Frames and Creatures
Inspired by Adolph Vandertie, Levi Fisher Ames, and Albert Zahn
Pre-K to 3rd Grade Curriculum
Day One: Meet the Artists: Adolph Vandertie, Albert Zahn, and Levi Fisher Ames
- Watch the bilingual gallery tour of Good Road to Follow.
- Look at the slideshow of images of Vandertie, Zahn, and Ames’ work and discuss the questions together or write or draw about them in a journal.
- Optional: Read about the artists using the artist bios for Vandertie and Zahn and Ames.
Day Two: Think about Pattern!
- Watch the Literacy Link to the Arts video of Spots in a Box in English and/or Spanish.
- Add patterns to the four artworks on the Zahn and Ames Coloring Sheet.
Day Three: Create a frame: Part One
- Watch the video tutorial for creating a wood frame.
- Start creating your frame.
- Clean up materials to finish your project on day four.
Day Four: Complete your Frame
- Add a second and third layer of pattern to the frame (review the tutorial video if needed).
- Optional: Fill out the artwork reflection form.

- Write a story about the bird you chose to frame.
