Learning and Belonging: Looking at Adolph Vandertie, Dr. Charles Smith, and the work of contemporary artists from the exhibition Between You and Me
Day One: Meet the Artists: Adolph Vandertie, Albert Zahn, and Levi Fisher Ames
- Watch the gallery tour of Good Road to Follow in English and/or Spanish.
- Look at the slideshow of images of Vandertie, Zahn, and Ames’ work and discuss the questions together or write or draw about them in a journal.
- Optional: Read about the artists using the artist bios for Vandertie and Zahn and Ames.
Day Two: Soap Carving
- Watch the soap carving video tutorial and complete the project. (It might take more than one day or more than 30 minutes to fully complete the project.)
Day Three: Historic Markers Part 1
- Watch the gallery tour of Between You and Me and Dr. Charles Smith: Aurora in English and/or Spanish
- Complete the Historic Marker Thinksheet
Day Four: Historic Markers Part 2
- Create a historic marker. Use the final text from the historic marker think sheet and write it on the scratch art paper using the alphabet stencil.
- Choose a place to display your marker.
Extension Activities
- Explore the virtual tour of the exhibition Good Road to Follow.
- Look at more artwork by Albert Zahn and Levi Fisher Ames.
- Write a story about your soap carving.
- Draw a map and create a walking tour of your historic markers.
