Day Three: Create a Narrative Painting
- Finish watching the workshop tutorial or re-watch it for review if needed.
- Begin sketching and painting. Finish painting the backgrounds and let them dry.
Teacher tip! If you are a 3rd through 5th grade Sheboygan educator who received materials from JMKAC, instruct students to paint inside the box the supplies were delivered in to make it easier to move paintings to dry and keep paint off of other surfaces. (Early finishers can also decorate their boxes!)
Day Four: Complete your Painting
- Add additional details and layers to your paintings.
- Optional: fill out artwork reflection form
Optional: Day Five 3rd-5th grade
Use the permanent marker to add additional details once the painting is dry. If the marker is used on any wet acrylic paint, it will stop working.
Connect to Mystery Science
Prompt students to add details to their background using what they have learned in science about the sky, weather, water, etc.
Extensions:
- Prompt students to write their story and/or share the story with classmates.
- Create additional paintings or drawings that show other parts of the story inspired by how Nick Engelbert’s created a series of narrative paintings from different parts of his life.
