Exhibition Artist-in-Residence: Sarah Rowe

Sarah Rowe, For My Fleabitten Diamond, 2022; mixed media on canvas; 60 x 72 in. Courtesy of Great Plains Art Museum.

April 8–17, 2025

Local waterways undeniably make an impact on our lives and communities. One of several meanings for Sheboygan is a Chippewa phrase which roughly translates as “passage or waterway between the lakes.” For her 2025 ExAIR residency, Sarah Rowe will consider the importance of water for Sheboygan and its influence on our everyday lives.

Join Rowe at the Arts Center and along local waterways for a series of workshops to create vessels and bundles out of natural materials. “Vessel” carries multiple meanings in relation to water, from a watercraft to a container or even a body. “Bundles” refer to an Indigenous practice of collecting spiritually significant items and wrapping them together in muslin or other fibrous materials to use in ceremonies or altar spaces. The finished vessels and bundles will be incorporated by Rowe into her 2025 exhibition at the Arts Center in August.

Outside of workshops, stop by the Social STUDIO to learn more about Rowe’s practice and for opportunities to meet the artist.
