Mary Nohl’s House by Kambel Smith

Foreground: Kambel Smith, Mary Nohl, 2021; cardboard, foam board, spray paint, clay, hot glue, and steel wire; 16 x 45 x 43 in. John Michael Kohler Arts Center Collection.

Kambel Smith (b, 1986) is an Autisarian artist who lives and works in Philadelphia. According to Smith, “an Autisarian is a person born with super-human abilities due to the condition called autism. My family created a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the face of autism by changing the attitude of those challenged by the so-called disorder. The Autisarian symbol serves as a beacon of light for the growing wave of autistic super-humans.” His superpower allows him to expertly render architectural details in cardboard, to scale, based on photographs he pulls from the Internet.

In 2021, the artist was invited to consider several Milwaukee landmarks, including the Mary Nohl house, for an exhibition at The Green Gallery. The miniature version of the lakeside environment includes Nohl’s extensive enhancements to the property, among them are the wooden panels that adorn the façade and several of the concrete sculptures that dot the property. This work represents the first time Smith used clay—a material choice that was inspired by his desire to capture the texture of Nohl’s outdoor works.
